What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Transponder Codes
As its name suggests, transponders send out an encoded signal that contains the four-digit code when it is questioned by air traffic control. This signal, called SQUAWK Code SQUAWK Code is used to identify aircraft on radar screens. It also serves to transmit an exact message to air traffic control in the case of an emergency or to alert air traffic controllers to changing weather conditions. Squawk codes can be used to communicate with ATC when the pilot is unable speak to the radio. They are essential for safe flying.
